About Mindfully Wired (MW)

MW is a vibrant and unique cause and effect communications consultancy working on environmental issues and campaigns through bold, values-led communication. Within the environmental sector, we have a specialism in ocean-themed topics, working broadly across issues such as marine governance and protection, seafood marketing and the blue economy, and coastal communities. As a small-but-mighty team of scientists, linguists, event pros, policy buffs, and creatives, we use our broad experience and personal values to tell a new story of sustainability.

The Role

We are seeking a proactive, well-organised, and creative communications professional with a background in science and / or policy to join our busy team and lead the delivery of high-quality communications and events for a number of new and existing projects. The successful applicant will be equally comfortable delivering events as well as developing and executing communications strategies. You will have excellent written and oral communication skills and will be genuinely enthusiastic about working with diverse stakeholders to bring about positive change.

Our Science & Policy team works to bridge the gap between researchers, fishers, NGOs and policy makers. We work with a range of clients, from international research groups driving for sustainable fisheries management, to advocacy campaigns, an All-Party Parliamentary Group, and government-led initiatives to tackle bycatch.

You will work extremely closely with our Events Lead, Science & Policy Leads and members of the Senior Leadership Team to support delivery of a range of projects, centred on marine management, fisheries and sustainability. As a Senior Consultant, you will lead on set projects within your portfolio, contribute to projects led by Project Leads and provide support for more junior team members, as needed. Other duties will include (but are not limited to) supporting the strategy and delivery of upcoming projects; writing and editing for a range of audiences; desk-based research; rapporteuring; facilitation, and engagement with key stakeholders.

The role will suit someone who is extremely personable, has first class organisational skills, excellent attention to detail and is happy being an all-rounder. We’re looking for someone who can juggle multiple projects, think creatively, adapt their written style and tone to suit diverse audiences, and mastermind and deliver compelling events. A friendly and outgoing “people person”, working collaboratively – with clients, stakeholders and the MWC team – will be second nature to you.

An interest in sustainability and an appreciation for the marine environment are essential. You should be curious to explore new topics and ideas, able to create meaningful connections within and between projects, and produce content that has impact on a relatable, human level.

The Science & Policy team is an important and growing area of the business and as such, we need you to be more than “just a doer.” Providing quality output is a given. Providing client counsel and managing client relationships is equally important.

You will be responsible for:

  • Leading the delivery of a set portfolio of events-centred projects and managing all aspects of client business, from developing and executing communications and events strategies, and maintaining strong client relationships through to project and budget management, with support from the Project Lead.
  • Serving as the main point of contact for your assigned clients, you will be responsible for building relationships and managing the delivery of work among your internal team (which will involve managing upwards as much as downwards!)
  • Leading the planning, design and delivery of online and in-person events for diverse projects relating to fisheries and the marine environment
  • Producing high-quality written outputs (conference reports, policy briefs, briefing documents, conference agendas, newsletters, press releases etc.)
  • Copyediting and proofreading a diverse range of materials.
  • Producing and implementing bespoke communications and social media strategies and content, and maintaining communications channels for clients.
  • Developing the copy for infographics and visual communications materials based on reports and academic papers.
  • Any other tasks as required at the discretion of the MWC Director and wider Senior Leadership Team.
  • Understanding the importance of and relationship between client service and profitability and working within the boundaries of budgets.

Supporting skills requirements:

Essential:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and first-class attention to detail
  • Experience planning and delivering high-quality in-person, online and hybrid events, including agenda design and logistics organisation
  • Proven experience in leading projects
  • Confidence in adapting complex text and wide-ranging research into digestible materials for use by non-experts
  • Top-notch organisational skills and an ability to prioritise and handle a variety of projects and tasks while maintaining high standards
  • Confidence working independently in high pressure situations and a solutions-first mindset coupled with a calm demeanour
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders including scientists, fishers, government officials and more.
  • Confidence in using the Microsoft Office suite
  • Degree-level qualification

Desirables:

  • Understanding of social science approaches
  • Experience with facilitation design and facilitation
  • Experience of working in a communications agency and / or fast-paced environment
  • Previous knowledge of fisheries, seafood or marine conservation issues
  • Familiarity with Google Workspace, and any design tools

Benefits

  • Flexible working: core hours 10am-4pm with 3 days per week expected in the office
  • 25 days holiday (plus your birthday off and an additional day for volunteering / supporting a cause close to your heart)
  • Twice yearly training sessions and time allocated each month for CPD
  • Access to an Employee Assistance Program

Office perks such as good coffee, weekly fresh fruit, breakfast and snack options.
