4 Science Communication Jobs for a Purposeful Career

The environment sector is an exciting place right now: from breakthroughs on blue carbon to progress – and protest – on managing our seas, environmental scientists, activists, practitioners and policy-makers are at the forefront of new research, insights, and technologies that impact our planet. But the work they are doing is only half the battle. Without effective communication to shout about their success, progress risks stumbling at the first hurdle.

That’s where we come in.

Communications play a critical role in galvanising stakeholders, widening the net of inclusivity around key issues, and attracting attention that can drive forward practical solutions. The people behind those communications have the unique job of fusing together fascinating, and oftentimes technical, groundwork with creative executions, transforming the nitty-gritty in a way that showcases it accessibly and meaningfully. This is all done with the purpose of sparking conversations and shining a light on the positive initiatives that pave the way for a more sustainable future.

Sound interesting?

We’re currently recruiting four unique positions across the organisation. Whilst each role is suited to different skill sets, they are all ideal for someone who has a proven interest in sustainability, a knack for communicating, and a genuine drive to make positive change in support of this wonderful planet we call home.

Struggling to work out if there’s a role for you? We’ve included some of the essential info below.

A day in the life

At Mindfully Wired, no day tends to be the same! The job is predominantly desk-based, working from our Bristol-based Ethical Properties Office in Paintworks. But our work has taken previous post-holders to fishing harbours and villages in pockets all over the UK, as well as across the sea to Northern Ireland to speak to stakeholders and uncover stories. A typical day could involve drafting project briefs, briefing staff, developing new business quotes and bids, and responding to client emails; but also helping to write film scripts, press releases and blogs, pitching in on creative ideas, and contributing to the high level of innovative work that comes out of our team. If you have any further questions about this role, get in touch. You can email rachel@mindfullywired.org to find out more.

You will gain valuable experience in quality comms practices, and learn how to distil insightful information and cutting-edge research into accessible and engaging outputs. There’s also a training (CPD) budget in-house and plenty of opportunity to grow. Previous interns have since become Comms Officers and Managers! All our work not only supports our clients’ goals, but helps to conserve the marine environment while supporting the people that depend upon its resources. In this role, no two days are the same!
